These modules are typically fully finished in the factory, then transported to the construction site, where they are inter-connected to form the complete structure. Volumetric steel modular construction offers exceptional advantages over conventional construction methods.

These advantages include efficiency gains through faster construction schedules, greater precision via controlled manufacturing, lean manufacturing practices and safety improvement via site activity reduction. Despite the many advantages of modular construction over conventional construction, permanent volumetric modular construction only represents about 4% of Canada’s overall construction market. This construction method is expected to play a key role in addressing one of Canada’s most pressing challenges in the coming years: the affordable housing crisis.

This presentation highlights the structural challenges of one of Canada's tallest volumetric modular building structures (VMBS), completed in 2021 in Gatineau, Quebec. In this 12-storey VMBS, the steel modules, acting as the gravity force-resisting system, are stacked around reinforced concrete cores designed as “conventional” lateral force-resisting system (LFRS). This presentation is structured around four key themes: (1) development of novel steel inter-modular connections; (2) the “paradox” of gravity force-resisting steel modules; (3) transformation toward fully steel VMBS by replacing reinforced concrete cores with steel alternatives; and (4) transportation- and handling-induced damage to non-structural components of steel modules.

This presentation aims to broaden the perspective of researchers, designers, and practitioners by exploring innovative steel solutions for modular buildings, with an emphasis on the structural differences between “modular” and “conventional” construction methods.

Eligibility for CEUs

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:

Participant must attend at least 75% of the webinar

CEUs are only eligible for a participant with a 90% attention rating. This issue is compounded on sites having weak soils, a common scenario in some high-hazard Canadian regions such as Vancouver Island. In these locations, we have reached a point where the viability of the conventional typology of heavy reinforced concrete floors with a central shearwall core is no longer assured. Framing floors with structural steel and using modern ductile structural seismic systems using structural steel reduces weight of our buildings by approximately 50%. This results in an opportunity to dramatically reduce the loading on seismic force resisting systems and deep foundations, which is particularly beneficial on ‘difficult’ sites. Additional benefits include a separation of the gravity and seismic energy dissipating systems, resulting in a more resilient building. This session includes case study of a successful 24 storey high-rise project in Victoria, BC, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of modern steel construction as an alternative to cast in place concrete framing.

Eligibility for CEUs

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:

Participant must attend at least 75% of the webinar

CEUs are only eligible for a participant with a 90% attention rating. By taking this in depth look at a real-life example, this presentation offers engineers an insight to the advantages and challenges of working with new materials and offers strategies for how project teams can successfully incorporate more advanced and sustainable materials into their future designs.

Eligibility for CEUs

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:

Participant must attend at least 75% of the webinar

CEUs are only eligible for a participant with a 90% attention rating. A large portion of Canada’s building stock predates 1970, when the first probabilistic seismic hazard map was introduced. Since then, seismic design loads have increased significantly—from a 100-year return period in 1970 to a 2475-year return period by 2005.

To support the evaluation and upgrading of existing buildings, NBC includes guidance in Commentary L of its User’s Guide. Buildings assessed using these guidelines are expected to meet performance levels consistent with NBC’s intent. For example, the 2005 Commentary L referenced the 1992 NRC Guidelines, which were based on a 475-year return period.

In 2015, Commentary L introduced three levels of seismic evaluation tied to different hazard levels, all requiring full earthquake loads without reduction. The upcoming 2025 edition will adopt a three-tiered evaluation system based on the new Seismic Evaluation Guidelines (SEG) for Existing Buildings in Canada, designed to align with ASCE/SEI 41-2023. Tier 1 and Tier 2 focus on Life Safety, while Tier 3 supports both force-based and performance-based approaches. Although the near-absence of brittle fracture failures in Canadian bridges built since the implementation of the “fracture control plan” demonstrates the adequacy of current practices, the simplicity of the toughness requirements in Canadian provisions limits an engineer’s flexibility and provides an inconsistent level of reliability.

Compared to its European and American counterparts, the brittle fracture provisions in CSA S6 do not recognize the role played by other factors in fracture risk, such as demand-to-capacity ratio and plate thickness. Canadian brittle fracture provisions also lack any probabilistic basis, in contrast to other failure modes covered in the Canadian design codes. For these reasons, the creation of reliability-based toughness requirements and an accompanying design tool has been an area of continued interest.

Building on a previous CISC-funded research project, this presentation discusses the development of a simple design tool to determine Charpy V-Notch test temperatures and impact energies that provide a consistent level of reliability across a broad range of scenarios.
