These modules are typically fully finished in the factory, then transported to the construction site, where they are inter-connected to form the complete structure. Volumetric steel modular construction offers exceptional advantages over conventional construction methods.

These advantages include efficiency gains through faster construction schedules, greater precision via controlled manufacturing, lean manufacturing practices and safety improvement via site activity reduction. Despite the many advantages of modular construction over conventional construction, permanent volumetric modular construction only represents about 4% of Canada’s overall construction market. This construction method is expected to play a key role in addressing one of Canada’s most pressing challenges in the coming years: the affordable housing crisis.

This presentation highlights the structural challenges of one of Canada's tallest volumetric modular building structures (VMBS), completed in 2021 in Gatineau, Quebec. In this 12-storey VMBS, the steel modules, acting as the gravity force-resisting system, are stacked around reinforced concrete cores designed as “conventional” lateral force-resisting system (LFRS). This presentation is structured around four key themes: (1) development of novel steel inter-modular connections; (2) the “paradox” of gravity force-resisting steel modules; (3) transformation toward fully steel VMBS by replacing reinforced concrete cores with steel alternatives; and (4) transportation- and handling-induced damage to non-structural components of steel modules.

This presentation aims to broaden the perspective of researchers, designers, and practitioners by exploring innovative steel solutions for modular buildings, with an emphasis on the structural differences between “modular” and “conventional” construction methods.

Eligibility for CEUs

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:

Participant must attend at least 75% of the webinar

CEUs are only eligible for a participant with a 90% attention rating.
