This issue is compounded on sites having weak soils, a common scenario in some high-hazard Canadian regions such as Vancouver Island. In these locations, we have reached a point where the viability of the conventional typology of heavy reinforced concrete floors with a central shearwall core is no longer assured. Framing floors with structural steel and using modern ductile structural seismic systems using structural steel reduces weight of our buildings by approximately 50%. This results in an opportunity to dramatically reduce the loading on seismic force resisting systems and deep foundations, which is particularly beneficial on ‘difficult’ sites. Additional benefits include a separation of the gravity and seismic energy dissipating systems, resulting in a more resilient building. This session includes case study of a successful 24 storey high-rise project in Victoria, BC, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of modern steel construction as an alternative to cast in place concrete framing.

Eligibility for CEUs

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:

Participant must attend at least 75% of the webinar

CEUs are only eligible for a participant with a 90% attention rating.
