Webinar  - 0.075 CEU

Duration: 53 m

Presented by Cora Pulnicki, P.Eng., MEng

As Canada’s first supertall tower, The ONE at 1 Bloor St West is redefining the limits of composite and structural steel design in high-rise residential construction.

This session will explore the critical steel and composite engineering solutions that enabled the tower to rise over 300 meters while meeting ambitious architectural and spatial goals—including a column-free 30x30 meter retail space. Attendees will gain insight into the innovative use of inclined steel mega struts, HISTAR high-strength wide-flange sections, and Cast Connex High Integrity Blocks to create a complex, load-bearing transfer system that supports the 85-storey concrete tower above. Emphasis will be placed on the building’s composite mega-columns—engineered using Grade 450 structural steel, Grade 500 rebar, and 75 MPa self-consolidating concrete—to achieve extreme strength and stiffness.

The session will also address the detailing of solid steel nodes to manage multi-directional tension and compression forces at the transfer interface; and discuss the structural steel crown supporting a 350-tonne tunned mass damper designed by RWDI. From structural form to fatigue and creep mitigation, this session provides a deep dive into how collaboration between architects, engineers, and steel fabricators pushed the boundaries of constructability and performance. Attendees will leave with valuable lessons in composite system optimization, detailing for erection, and achieving architectural clarity through engineered steel.

Eligibility for CEUs

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:

  1. Participant must attend at least 75% of the webinar
  2. CEUs are only eligible for a participant with a 90% attention rating. In order to maximize your rating the webinar must be full screen. Working on other things while the webinar is running (i.e. not full attention) minimizes your attention rating. The webinar platform automatically tracks your rating.
  3. CEUs are issued to the registered contact person only (person with assigned seat)

Notes

  1. Upon your purchase, you will receive an email to register the participant seat(s). Assignment of your seat is necessary for webinar registration, a necessary step, even if you have purchased only one. Please check your junk folder if not in your inbox.
  2. Webinars are non-refundable. Access will end on November 3, 2026.
