Assembly-Based Estimating: Pricing like Production

Webinar - 0.075 CEU
Duration: 46 m
Presented by Tyler Fish P.Eng., Estimating Manager at Walters Group
Fabrication cost estimates are often created in ways that don’t reflect how steel is actually built, resulting in misalignment with operations later in the project lifecycle.
This session explores how adopting an assembly-based estimating approach brings estimating practices into alignment with real-world fabrication workflows to bridge the gap between the office and the shop floor. Rather than pricing at the individual part level or relying on abstract unit codes, assembly-based estimating structures work the way fabricators execute it: by assemblies. This method helps reduce guesswork, enhances coordination between estimating and production teams, and leads to more consistent schedules and cost control.
Attendees will gain practical insight into implementing this approach in their estimating process by leveraging repeatable templates, historical data, and shop-centric thinking to improve accuracy and profitability. Whether you're an estimator, sales manager, or executive seeking greater alignment between bidding and building, this session will offer actionable strategies to make your estimating process a better reflection of how your shop truly works.
