Webinar  - 0.075 CEU

Duration: 59 m

Presented by Dominic Mattman, BASc, MASc, P.Eng., LEED® AP

Discussion of the CISC case study on the embodied carbon of 4 constructed low-rise steel commercial/institutional projects published in May of 2025.

Life Cycle Assessment was completed for the buildings to establish the embodied carbon intensity of the buildings relative to the leading Canadian embodied carbon reference standards (Vancouver Building By-law, Toronto Green Standards and the CAGBC Zero Carbon Building Standard).

Three scenarios for each structure were consider: 1) the Baseline scenario, 2) Scenario 1 which utilizes lower carbon materials for each of the steel components, 3) Scenario 2 which was based on Scenario 1 with the wide flange sections using a Global Warming Potential (GWP) representative of steel from a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF). The study also explores the relative contributions of the materials in this building archetype to the overall embodied carbon with specific focus on the structural steel components.

Furthermore, the potential embodied carbon reductions that would be available through the selection of lower carbon steel products. The impacts of increased seismic loading in NBC 2020 and impact of potential replacement of the floor system with a Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) floor system are discussed.

Eligibility for CEUs

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:
