This comprehensive design reference contains CSA S16:24, Design and construction of steel structures and CISC Commentary.  

Published by the CISC since 1967, the Handbook of Steel Construction is the standard reference for the design and detailing of structural steel in Canada. The 13th Edition has been updated to reflect changes to CSA S16:24, and it is intended to be used in conjunction with the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) 2025.  

This edition is a significant expansion of the Handbook, including the addition of design guidance for more connection types in Part 3, the addition of more sections to the resistance and properties tables, and the reorganization of Parts 6 to 8 into the expanded Parts 6 to 10. 

Member design tables are based on steel grades ASTM A992, A572 Grade 50, A913 and A572 Grade 65, A500 Grade C, and CSA G40.21-350W. 

This edition includes the following parts, with new content highlighted: 

  1. CSA S16:24, Design and construction of steel structures standard (including Update No. 1, March 2026); 

  1. CISC Commentary on CSA S16:24 – includes revised content for column bases and anchor rods to align with updates to Clause 25, and updated information on Gerber construction, fatigue, and seismic design;

Connections and Tension Members – includes new guidance and design aid tables for beam connections, including for standard shear tabs, extended shear tabs, end-plates, double-coped beams, concrete embedded plates, and end-plate and flange plate moment connections; new guidance is provided for evaluating offset plate brace end connections in tension and the sway buckling mechanism for lap plate brace end connections in compression; and new content and design aid tables are provided for HSS-to-HSS truss connections;

  1. Flexural Members – new guidance and design aid tables are provided for single angle biaxial bending, including calculated properties for the principal axes; 

  1. Member Properties and Dimensions – the tables of properties and dimensions have been updated to include two new W-shape sections and the addition of over 100 HSS sections;  

  1. Welding, Fabrication, and Embodied Carbon – includes expanded content on welding, new content on fabrication tolerances, and new guidance on embodied carbon design with steel;
