This course provides practical guidance on the design of steel column base connections in accordance with CSA S16:19, while also introducing participants to significant changes and new requirements incorporated in CSA S16:25. Participants will learn the fundamental principles of load transfer, resistance calculations, and detailing requirements for both ungrouted and grouted base plate connections. Through a series of design examples, the course explores the behavior of base plates subjected to axial loads, shear forces, and moments, and examines methods for designing simple and moment-resisting base connections.

Topics include load and resistance calculations for ungrouted base connections, shear resistance of grouted connections, and the design of grouted base plates for both small and large moments. Participants will also review common base plate configurations, detailing best practices, and the application of various design methodologies, including the equivalent cantilever, yield line, and effective width methods.

The advantages and limitations of each approach are discussed to support sound engineering judgment and efficient design. Throughout the course, participants will gain insight into the key differences between CSA S16:19 and CSA S16:25, helping them understand how recent code changes influence the design and detailing of steel base connections.

Eligibility for CEUs

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:
