Base Connections for Steel-Framed Buildings - Part 2

Prerequisite: Participants are encouraged to complete Base Connections for Steel-Framed Buildings - Part 1, as this course expands on the key concepts covered in the introductory course.

Building on the concepts and design methods introduced in Part 1, this course advances the design of steel column base connections by focusing on anchor rod design, shear transfer mechanisms, and base plate behavior under combined compression, shear, and moment loading. Participants will expand their understanding of steel base connection design by examining how grouted and ungrouted base plates resist applied forces and by applying the provisions of CSA S16:19 to practical engineering problems, while also reviewing the new requirements and design implications introduced in CSA S16:25.

Through worked examples and design exercises, the course explores the strength and selection of anchor rods, the mechanisms available to resist factored shear forces in grouted base connections, and the distinction between small- and large-moment behavior. Participants will learn how these loading conditions influence base plate design and will develop the skills required to design steel base connections subjected to combinations of compression, shear, and moment forces.

The course also highlights key updates contained in CSA S16:25 and discusses their impact on the analysis, design, and detailing of steel base connections, enabling participants to confidently apply both current practice and newly adopted code provisions.

CEUs will be issued for this webinar to participants that meet the following criteria:
