This session introduces the role of diaphragms in the seismic performance of steel‑framed buildings, following the requirements of NBC 2020 and CSA S16:19, while highlighting key updates introduced in CSA S16:24.
Participants will review fundamental concepts, learn how seismic diaphragm forces develop and are distributed, and explore the design of ductile and concrete‑filled diaphragm systems. The session also covers key considerations for single‑storey buildings with flexible diaphragms. By the end, attendees will understand how different diaphragm types influence overall seismic behavior and how to design them effectively.
Prerequisites to this course include Session 1: Seismic Design of Steel-Framed Buildings - Introduction – CISC Steel Store) and Diaphragm Analysis and Design for Steel-Framed Buildings – CISC Steel Store.
